Social enterprise, while growing rapidly, is still a relatively new way for non-profits to operate. Every organization practicing social enterprise is a pioneer, blazing a courageous trail into promising, but uncharted territory. To support these pioneering efforts, Enterprising No-Profits has developed a variety of useful tools that help non-profits plan, launch and grow their social enterprise.
At this year's Meetup, ENP was pleased to engage Matthew Quetton of Momentum Consulting Group, one of a growing group of consultants focusing their efforts on the social enterprise space. Matthew presented two new tools that social enterprises can use to gain greater clarity on the complex challenges of growing a successful blended-value organization.
His tool, Social Enterprise Matrix, charting an organization's Mission objectives relative to their business/financial objectives in a two dimensional grid, offered organizations a succinct visual tool designed to help guide key strategic decisions. Working through a dynamic table exercise, participants worked together to answer a challenge presented by one of them. Using Matthew ‘s second planning tool, participants were able to capture their advise into a simple framework that highlighted their key strategy to success and growth.
Matthew was surrounded by other consultants and experts from various backgrounds, who also believe in and support social enterprise. Circling the room, providing advice and perspective on Governance, Leadership, Marketing, Operations and Reporting, were Junxion Strategy, JDQ Systems, KPMG, ASQ, Propellor and Deena Chochinov. The table discussion and coach insight started with the presentation of two real case studies from social enterprises Street Youth Job Action and DreamRider Theatre.

“What is social enterprise?” was the key topic of the 2007 Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise hosted by enp in Vancouver. In 2009, at the BC Summit on Social Enterprise we discussed and debated “Why do social enterprise?”. And now in 2012 at the enp Social Enterprise MeetUp we’ll reach further into the “how” of social enterprise, addressing a combination of creating a supportive environment and refining blended value business skills.
